I made so many new friends this weekend at #GFPhilly (Geekfest Philly). I joined this e-mail listserv called APhotoADay back in 2008 when I was a junior in college (wow that was a long-ass time ago) where working photojournalists and photographers post 1 photo per day and get criticism, insight and sometimes praise on their work.
It has been the #1 thing that has influenced me throughout my photographic life (Sam Abell is a close second). This was my second Geekfest, the first being 3 years ago in Denver. After Denver, I got pretty depressed about not having a staff job, not winning any awards and not having any good work to show for it.
This Geekfest was different. In the span of months, I’ve started working as a freelancer in New York and have had magazine assignments, something I didn’t plan on happening, at least this year. Other photographers, my peers, came up to me and asked me about my cover letter, asked what it’s like to work for The WSJ and how I survive in NYC. I’m happy to help because I want others to succeed more than me. We’re in a small community. None of you are my competition. I look to you for guidance and support as much as you look to me. Click that ask box whenever you’d like.
And if you aren’t already apart of it, this is how to join APhotoADay
